Online Indicators and Warning Enables Business

by | Apr 16, 2020 | Case Study, Reputation Defense

The Challenge

A multinational energy company (the Client) operating in a volatile nation had recently faced serious threats to its personnel and infrastructure as threat actors had begun resorting to violence. The company needed in-depth social media sentiment analysis and timely indications and warnings across social media and closed online forums in order to achieve a more stable risk posture and protect its people and assets.

Why Nisos

The Client needed to find a partner focused on actor-centric analysis to assist its own security team with predictive, actionable intelligence. There was a very high volume of threats being made against the Client, so differentiating between real, sophisticated threats, and noise was highly important and more than commercially available tools and social media monitoring technologies could handle.

Nisos operators conducted in-depth research and analysis on historical social media content to identify key influencers and tactics used by threat actors to garner support for acts of violence. Nisos analysts also worked closely with the client to map out relationships between various threat actor groups in both the physical and digital world, using open source investigation and gaining access to online closed communities to broaden the Client’s scope of awareness.

Nisos consistently tracked hundreds of online personas, groups, forums, and pages, in addition to local and regional media outlets, blogs, and forums to identify the legitimate threats to the Client. In addition to providing routine intelligence, Nisos analysts responded to immediate RFIs, including attribution and diligence investigations surrounding possible insider threats. Nisos researchers also conducted deep dives on sentiment analysis prior to negotiations for a multibillion dollar expansion deal, including heat maps showing where positive and negative sentiment were concentrated.

Using Nisos daily, weekly, and monthly intelligence reports, the Client significantly increased its awareness of both the threat landscape and its reputation in this notoriously volatile and fragmented location, helping it to secure its multi-billion dollar operation from the types of threats that could cost millions of lost revenue per day if successful.

Beyond threat management, the Client used its enhanced understanding of community sentiment to adjust its multi-million dollar community outreach and public relations campaigns.
