Using Data for Market Entry of Product and Services Based on Security Incidents
A global consumer service provider (the Client) was exploring different foreign cities to launch their new service, using security and safety as a critical metric.
Nisos was tasked with identifying geographic and temporal crime patterns within multiple cities being considered for expansion of Client’s services. The deliverable was scoped as an assessment on neighborhoods or smaller granular assessment of specific crimes, where they occurred, and times of day in which they occurred to produce a list of suggested “no-go” areas incorporating time of day. The Client approached Nisos regarding this study because of our ability to aggregate, geo-fence, and analyze numerous types of available internet, geopolitical, and local country crime data to produce actionable risk recommendations that could be easily integrated into the broader business decision-making process.
Nisos researchers created a variety of incident maps to interactively visualize local crime in 10 different cities, using Qgis to create custom shapefiles, the visualization tool Tableau1, and open source crime reporting.
Based on available data within numerous cities and neighborhoods, we made various high, medium, and low confidence assessments of the Client’s ability to avoid dangerous incidents in parts of various neighborhoods, with granularity down to specific times a security incident would be least likely to occur. We produced an interactive crime map that was fairly uniform for geographic dispersion of incidents and in some cases, gave predictable times that made assessing likely safe time periods reasonable.
In other instances, it was not possible to predict times of day that security incidents would occur due to high crime density at all hours. For example, according to data derived from local crime reporting, we were able to make granular assessments that the Client should completely avoid a neighborhood location where police-involved shootings, murder, and aggravated assaults made up a combined 70% of all violent crime.
The Client used our assessments to make more informed decisions about which markets to enter, and in what fashion, limiting potentially damaging financial, reputational and most importantly, physical risks of choosing poorly. Not surprisingly, the Client eventually launched in several cities and neighborhoods with lower crime rates.
